Moving Abroad. A Guide!

Moving to another county is an exciting prospect. However, it can also be daunting, and there are many factors to consider. So how can you successfully move abroad and make the process smooth and stress-free?

Planning

The single most important thing to do when considering a move is to plan. It’s tempting to jump straight into the action, especially when you’ve made the decision. But good planning will save time in the long run and help avoid any unnecessary issues.

Start by making a list of all the information you need to find out about the county you’re heading to and how to tie up loose ends from the place you’re leaving. Think about utilities and informing companies when you’re going. Tell kid’s schools in advance when you plan to take children out to ensure a smooth transition without causing too much disruption. Make sure you have enrolled them in new schools before you move.

Sell or let home

Depending on where you’re moving and how quickly you want to get there, you should decide whether selling or renting is the best option. If the country you’re heading to has high living costs, property prices can vary; you may choose to rent somewhere initially until you find the right house. On the other hand, you may find it less stressful at the beginning to rent out your existing home just in case your new country of residence isn’t what you expected. Buying a new house in a foreign country is a big commitment, so it’s wise to keep options open.

Ship/sell/toss

Transporting goods is challenging, and it’s helpful to spend some time deciding what you will take with you, what you should sell, and what to toss in the garbage. If you’re downsizing and, on a budget, the most cost-effective option is to sell items. It’s also a great way to collect extra money for the move. However, moving can be costly, so you should find as many ways as possible to generate cash.

If you have any significant assets, such as cars,  you should consider using a company that can help; for example, if you own a Porsche, you can go online and look at sell my Porsche to find companies that specialize in selling specific makes and are experienced in finding buyers that will pay the right price. It’s also one less thing for you to think about when planning your move.

Selling furniture is an excellent way to downsize, and the less furniture you have, the cheaper transport costs will be. Consider selling on eBay or advertising locally. It’ll contribute to the moving budget and also make moving a more straightforward process.

Moving house is a great incentive for clearing out clutter and disposing of items that no longer have a purpose. Sometimes it’s hard to throw away things just in case they come in useful. Chances are if you had forgotten you owned it or haven’t used it for at least two years, you probably don’t need it, so get rid. It is a cathartic action.

With good planning and a positive attitude, a new and happy life awaits. Enjoy every moment!
